My friend just pointed this out to me. I have to admit, its basically correct. They have the saem, style structure and plot devices. They both infuse an old genre (ninjas/wizards) with modern settings and feel. The list goes on. I think this is pretty funny.

Holy crap, a Harry Potter/Naruto crossover would be the bestest thing evar. Just think of the combinations! Naruto/Harry, Hermoine/Sakura, Sasuke/Draco! Man, I would buy the crossover in a heartbeat.
Oh and no I don't find them to be similar at all, aside from a quick peak at each of the stories.

Before anyone takes the initiative to drop that fossil of a catchphrase "apples and oranges", I'd just like to point out that most of the points you've made reflect less on parallel's between either series in question, and more on how fantasy-adventure stories for young people are generally written.
Even when you throw in the particulars..."Orphans who have a natural gift for doing an unnatural thing training to be the best along with a girl and a boy who share his enthusiasm...etc. etc. etc.", it only illustrates a common set up found in any number of books written with that age group in mind.

Wah?!
How did this sort of discussion get in the Manga forum? I thought I pointed this out already in one of the threads in the Anime Forum...
Bleh... I'll look for the discussion now.

They really don't have anything in common at all. As Le Break pointed out, the main charcters in both stories are orphans with natural gifts. But besides that, they're completely diffrent.

No, no, if anything Naruto is like 'A Series of Unfortunate Events,' with Sakura as Violet, Naruto as Sunny and Sasuke as Klaus, throw in Orochimaru as Count Olaf, and toss in Iruka as Uncle Monty and you're all set.

Sorry to go off topic, but I just have to say that one of the other pictures on the site that Shizukuchan put up (greatest sporting moments) is further proof that going commando is a bad idea for athletes.

If you want a good book with Ninjas, but a lil bit more grown up [and without the modern setting],
I'm currently reading Across the Nightingale Floor. The first book in the Otori Trilogy.

Why this is in the manga forum, I don't know. I also don't know enough about Naruto to comment on similarities. But generally speaking, some of these insanely popular titles may have such a potent effect much because they're extremely well-formulated c0cktails of the most successful plot devices of all time. Every generation of storytellers takes the same old stories and gives them a fresh face. Reincarnation is the rule of thumb.
Truth be spoken. The only thing Harry Potter and Naruto have in common aside from their basic traditional construction is that they're insanely popular. Billions of other stories that use the same construction will never be compared to them because they will never achieve that level of popularity. Or they will be compared, and dismissed as "copying" Harry Potter and/or Naruto.

Well the thing is for me, i love Naruto...but i hate Harry Potter.
And it is weird that a few of you have just noticed they are alot in common, but if you read Masashi's history paraghaphs, then you would see him say that at first it wasnt about ningas and it was a about magicians and such. He kept this up until they said that he was making it to much like the already famous Harry Potter.
Harry Potter really isnt that good, its to corny..to boring..the lamest characters a book could have are found in Harry Potter.
Naruto on the other hand is corny yet not..(cant explain why), it has great characters..and there is always something to keep you from being bored.
HP sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!! *runs away from angry mob*

I must recommend that series. I have read all three and they are absolutely fantastic. Not to forget, not only do you have ninjas, but samurai as well, so you get the best of both worlds!

I've only read the one PsychoSaiya-jin mentioned, but it was pretty good.
*note, read it over the summer for school, they let us pick a book this time
And to be on topic...what was the topic again?

Naruto like Harry Potter?! Sure, there are a few similarities in the basic set-up but everyone knows ninjas > wizards.

I've never thought much of either series. Not because I think either are to childish but I've never been so into one of them thats I've jumped of the bridge of sanity.
I see where this is coming from whats then ppl could ask. WHats the difference in stories between DBZ and Naruto, or Poke'mon and Naruto. You can always find something in common.

OK maybe it's true that there are some similarities, but then you could also say that there are some similarities between Democrats and Republicans.
The only difference is that Republicans are a party of bad ideas and Democrats are a party of no ideas.

That was one of the worst analogies I have ever heard in my life.

Let me add a third analogy... Pokemon! See, the little furry creatures known as Pokemon were known in the past as "familiars."

Wow you're so right except for the fact that you could only have one and they were used to channel magical powers. So yea aside from those two minor points familiars and pokemon are exactly the same.

ive read a bit of the HP books and dont like them much. ive seen 2 of the movies & thought they should go to hell. finally ive read naruto but havent seen the anime & in my personal opinion though HP and Naruto are similar they are not at all alike in catching my attention. Naruto has something to move you along in the story while HP *coughbookfourcough* sits there and made me fall asleep (literally)

dear god, WHY IS THIS THREAD STILL GOING?!
they have a handful of similarities but for gods sake if you think hard enough you can link ANYTHING together with stuff like this!
Naruto is amazing
Harry Potter is a not so well written book that children have taken to for some reason.
((p.s. I just realised this thread was still going because people like me are posting in it to complain.....))

Heh, check this out:
Orochimaru - Major villain. Desires (and works toward) immortality. Affinity for snakes. Marks his subordinates with a curse which he can control that can also be very painful. Was trained in Konoha like Naruto, and had the Sandaime Hokage as a teacher.
Lord Voldemort - Major villain. Desires (and works toward) immortality. Affinity for snakes. Marks his subordinates with a curse which he can control that can also be very painful. Was trained at Hogwarts like Harry, and had Albus Dumbledore as a teacher.
There's a literary relative if I've ever seen one. Probably the only real similarity you can draw between the two works.

Of course this is a much more consideret thread.

I don't see how any of you can't see a resembelance between the two stories. There are so many similarities that you just might as well switch the names of the characters.
To the person who said Sasuke has a resembelance to Draco Malfoy, you are quite the oposite. Think about it, Harry Has a scar on his forehead that was from Voldemort. Sasuke has a scar (curse) on his neck from Orichiamaru. Sasuke is more valued than Naruto by everyone. Harry is more valued than Ron than anyone.
Naruto is more close to Ron in comparison. Both are underdogs and want to get better than Harry and Sasuke. They both wish they were as popular as Sasuke and Harry. So yeah there pretty similar in that way.
Harry and Ron are best friends and Naruto and Sasuke are friends (but not best friends). So theres a similarity to the relationship.
As I stated before both Voldemort and Orochiamaru put scars on their enemy. Mabey at different times of their life but nevertheless still they did. And comparing the two villans, Voldemort and Orochiamaru are both really snake like. Orochiamaru is pretty much a snake and Voldemort just really enjoys them (lol that kind of sounded wrong but ohh well).
I don't know why I didn't see it before but Sakura and Hermonie are extremly similar. They're both smarter than their friends and they are both pretty much bookworms in a way (one less than the other). Hermonie did like Harry at first but now she's into ron. Sakura has been showing slight hint's in likeing Naruto. Wow the two stories are really similar.
The fourth Hokage's death was tragic. The poor old man. He is quite similar to Dumbledore, who also die's in the Half Blooded Prince. I felt the same emotion when I read about both of their demises... such sadness dwelled up inside me. Everyone goes to Hokage for help and everyone in Hogwarts (+ the rest of the wizard world) goes to dumbledore for help.
Let's not forget about the Ninja war that's breaking out in the Naruto world. The same is happening in the Harry Potter world. Voldemort is building up an Army of all these evil creatures to take over the wizardring world. Orochiamaru is also building an army.
I'm sorry if I threw out spoilers at you but I wanted to point out the extreme similarities to everyone. I even sent a letter to Shonen Jump about it and now I'm hopping they'll throw it in an issue.

Seriously, its like linking Tekken and Full Metal Alchemist together just because of the fact that they're both anime (that is, if you can call Tekken an anime)... Frankly, I don't see much point in this thread...

I couldn't agree more. I could say a lot more things that are not anime related, but do relate to this thread, so I will only speak of one:
I have heard simmilar claims about hos the Eragon book series is like Star Wars (the whole Empire thing...).But as Le Bread has stated, its more of a genre thing: there will be similarities no matter what. I'm pretty sure that Naruto and HP can be compared to a lot of other shows, books, etc,.. and still come up with similarites, it's just inevitable.
Wow, what fun!
