well, the first anime I watched was Sky Dancers (I don't know if you could call it "anime")... But the Anime, that "struck" me is Flame Of Recca... I was really fascinated by the fire dragons..

My first anime was supposedly Akazukin Chacha... It was just too cute... But I didn"t know it was an anime back then... The first anime I watched which I was fully aware to be an anime was Ranma 1/2... That was one of the best anime that I have ever watched...

Sailor Moon haha then pokemon
Wow, can't believe I never posted in this yet o_o;
The first anime I ever watched would have been when I was very young and was either a Miyazaki film (I believe it was Laputa) or a mecha show (which I couldn't indentify even if I tried)... either way, it was in Chinese, and I didn't understand a damn word of it, mainly just watching it for the shiny pictures.
Now, the first anime that I watched that I could actually understand would have been SailorMoon, back during those early mornings of waking up in time to watch it. Even after it eventually stopped showing (or I was too tired to keep waking up for it), I still loved the series, and found ways to enjoy it as I could, either from buying the VHS tapes, or finding the (rather rare, actually) Canadian merchandise. It wasn't until my 8th grade year, though, That I actually learned SailorMoon had a comic (or "manga" as it was supposedly called), and belonged to a group of TV shows and movies called "Anime," and, well, I got my start right about there.
Unlike most people, I didn't ditch my old show once I found somerhing newer, shinier, probably better (and probably shorter). To this day, I do still love SailorMoon (*pokes her signature*), though I'd never admit to it being a good piece of work. I do love the manga however, and it currently sits towards the top of my favourite manga of all time. I'm also rewatching the Entire Series, both for a project I'm still planning to do, and also to show Roark it's greatness, since he never saw any more than the old DiC dubs. :D

Ronin Warriors, I was three! I've been a fan since then too... I have all the tapes I copied when I was nine and it came back on. I screamed when I saw the DVD's at the store one day... 0.o Slightly obsessed by my power ranger look-a-like.

My first animes were movies my father used to rent!
The tittles were in Portuguese and I never actually found them anywhere else but in the video store I go to here in Brazil.
The names were: Gigi e a fonte da Juventude -> Gigi and the Youth Fountain;
Doze Meses -> The Twelve Months of the Year;
Triangulo de Cristal -> The cristal Triangle.
I also watched Thunder Cats.
But my current adiction to anime comes from watching Saint Seiya.

Thinking way back I believe the first anime I ever watched was Akira. And not yet being 'into' anime it left me feeling a little WTF. I had also seen a few Miyazak films without really knowing them as anime; just a cartoon enjoyable to an adult. I know better now. However, in what has become my current and undoubtably continueing love of anime I have to a bit shamefully admit the first was Inuyasha. I blame it on the silly Adult Swim commercials that used to air so often that my husband and I eventually started playing along to the by then memorized script. It was a joke. We were completely making fun of it. But at some point one of us thought why not watch it and expand the game. I laughed and laughed and laughed. This at the age of 25. I guess I was a little behind the tide. But I have hence expanded and found better and more age appropriate material. But I have to blame it all on Inuyasha. Sad really.

The very first I watched was one I dont know the title of I'm still trying to find it.. it was a movie and all I remember was that it was about an invasion and it ended where the main character took over an alien craft (his hands get sucked in the red living interface) and he becomes one with it and sacrificed himself to save everyone from the invaders leaving his girl behind. A really different ending from what I had seen before back then since the main character didn't get to live happily ever after (I was 8 years old or so).
Since I have very little to go on I think I'll never find that same movie again and thats perhaps for the best too since I'll probably wont think its as cool as I thought it was...
The first anime I ever saw was, I think, DBZ. Even then I didn't think much of it. I was first hooked with Inu-yasha, from Toonami, and Mononoke Hime. The only reason I still like Inu-yasha. Can't hate that which gave you light. Then I did more research on Mononoke Hime, discovered Studio Ghibli, and kept researching anime.

The very first one that I saw was the first Digimon series. A while later I also watched a little DBZ and Sailor Moon, but Digimon was always my favorite back then. At the time I noticed that they were all somehow similar but it wasn't for a few years after I stopped watching them that I found out that they were this mysterious thing known as anime. A few months after that I discovered Yu Yu Hakusho and I haven't stopped watching since.

Holy crap, I haven't posted in this thread!
The first anime I've ever viewed was Sailor Moon on television during elementary school. Of course, I didn't know it was anime, and treated it like any other cartoon whenever I saw it. I've seen enough episodes to understand the premise and relationships between the characters, as well as a few arcs between all the different changes of right-hand men to the evil queen. But the moment that kept me most blessed was the episode with "Tuxedo Melvin!"
Also, I saw Dominion Tank Police on The Movie Channel as a kid too, and once again I didn't realize it was anime.
My first anime purchase was Macross Plus: The Movie when I actively sought it out many years later.

My first anime was Akira on VHS. My sister was home from NYU one day (92-93?) and she rented it and we watched it.
I was scarred for life :D
the first series that i watched was Robotech (Macross only) when it was part of Toonami back in the mid-90s
I must say this though, my taste for sci-fi and mecha was probably shaped by watching Transformers back in kindergarten(mid 80s)
oh snap, i forgot about Voltron back around the same time as Transformers, and also individual episodes of several series that were on Nickoledeon back in the late 80s-early 90s
The Green Man

Nausicaä of the Valley of Wind when it first come out. It was either on a rental video or channel 4, i just can't remember. I didn't even know it was japanese. I was 9-11 at the tiime something like that. I am 32 now so you can image how long ago it was. It was great then and great now, an animated master piece.

Put me in the camp that saw Transformers as their first anime. I still remember "War Dawn" as being a standout episode.
I didn't really get into anime until 1999, though, when I first watched Princess Mononoke and Pokemon.

i had seen sailor moon and pokomon and digimon and all of the others like that but i dont count them cause i saw them when i was six.
but i remember watching cartoon network when i must have been about 10 ( i am know 13) and they had an add that said anime action coming up or something like that so i continued to watch it . then the show started and i was like woah, what the? because the theme song had started and it was in some strange language and i considered changing the channel cause it was freaking me out but then this voice came up and said very dramatically "last time on orphen...blah ..blah ...cant remmember" and i was like "THIS IS SO COOOOL" since it had swearing and fighting and i when your ten thats like the definition of cool . and every monday to thursday i would try and hurry my parents out of the dining/living room after dinner so i could watch it.
and it would go kinda like this
"wow your in a hurry to clean away the dishes"
"haha yeah......so are you going to stay in here"
"nothing better to do"
"but i wanna watch tv"
"you can watch it while were here...what is it anyway"
"ummmm....i forgot" like id tell them it was called "orphen:sorcerous stabber"
"hmmmmm.....fine "
i would quickly change the channel when they walked in though
and i still do that with any anime i watch because i know my mum will give me a weird look and go "ok" in a way that meant "FREAK"
my dads okay with it since he has an obsession with music (he has 3000 cds 0_0) so he understands my obsession with anime (and because the french singer mylene farmer had her own video clip made in anime style and was very impressed when i thought it was made by production IG and it turned out i was right.....mum just scoffed
wow my first post ever i feel proud ^_^

I forgot about Speed Racer, I've seen that too! :D
Back when I wasn't aware of the Japanese animated form, I remembered watching Speed Racer in the early mornings before school (around 6 AM for me), and MTV aired this strangely enough. I still think I saw Sailor Moon before this, though I'm now having second thoughts with my memory here. But I'm pretty sure Sailor Moon was on FOX (aired at 9 AM), which was around the time Speed Racer was on MTV, making my distinction rather close with which remained my first.

I used to think Kimba the White Lion was the first anime I saw, until I remembered Speed Racer. I do remember correctly, and I believe I saw them in this order:
- Speed Racer
- Kimba the White Lion
- those sad anime thingies (Remy, Dog of Flanders, Sarah), they were aired within the same year
- Yaiba <== I noticed that this one was distinctly different, and I knew it was from Japan 'coz of the "weird words" in the song XD
- Daimos, Super Boink, Dragon Quest, Tondekeman, Dai <== these were aired simultaneously, a new episode per week
- YuYu Hakusho <== the anime that got me into anime ^^
- Sailor Moon/Dragonball <== aired simultaneously too, I think...
- St. Tail <== the last one that I remember watching before I was in highschool...
* All these are the "first" anime that I saw. Afterwards, there was an onslaught of anime in the local channels, and I can vaguely remember them all... T_T Oh, and Voltes V was on air sometime back then, buuuut I didn't like/watch it.

Wow, that's a lot anime, and a good variety at that. I've always been interested in seeing St. Tail on a strange note.
I also remembered watching anime on the Sci-fi Channel before I was into it, the anime I've seen were Project A-ko (I hated it then, but now it's a Top 10 favorite, go figure) and Galaxy Express 999 (I want to see this again so bad!). But this wasn't too long before I became a fan, so perhaps they were like precursors to what I'd eventually like.

I can't remember. I know I caught several on the TV out the corner of my eye but the first one I actually watched was either Tenchi Muyo, Grave of the Fireflies, or one of the Gundam shows.
A friend introduced me and I can specifically remember those titles sticking out in my mind so it's most likely one of them >.>

I think I might have posted in this thread before, or another just like this one. Oh well, whatever, never mind. (**Nirvana sucks**)
The first anime I was exposed to, but was too damn young and only bear vague memories about are Robotech (Macross, specifically) and Goldorak, the latter of which I only remember because my brother left me with a kick-ass, 3-foot tall action figure of the titular robot. I gave it back to him recently.
The first anime I've actually watched, without knowing that they were anime, were Dragon Ball Z, Pokémon, Digimon, and Monster Ranchers. Eventually, I dropped the first three when I was introduced to Vision of Escaflowne and Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water, which officially marked my 'true' introduction to anime (as in, I knew what the heck it actually was). For some reason, I kept watching Monster Rancher all the way. I don't remember why exactly, but perhaps it had something to do with it being just plain better than the other three (and even being a rather decent show overall).

Maybe I'm just growing old and senile, but it's all but impossible for me to remember now, much like how it's impossible for me to remember the first song I heard, or what was the first kind of candy I ate. It happened much too long ago, and I've experienced many more since then.
I started watching anime at a very young age...and wouldn't even realize it was actually anime until years later. But one vague memory remains, and, if asked to give a best guess, I'd choose that anime as my "very first". I don't remember the title, but it featured a little boy who knew martial arts and possibly had superhuman powers (no, not Goku, but something similar, as he was also somewhat primitive). This boy went on adventures with his pet tiger/some-sort-of-large-cat who may or may not have been able to fly.
If anyone can figure out the title through the paucity of info provided, I'll be very impressed...and appreciative as well, since it's been bugging me for a while now.

The first anime I watched that I knew was anime was Pokemon and Dragonball Z.
However as a child I saw Speed Racer and I was absolutely in love with Maya the Bee and Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics that played on Nick (back when the channel was actually good). I later found out that these two wonderful shows were anime. So I guess I was an anime fan even when I didn't know what I was watching. :D

Sailor Moon. While I realize the show is utter drivel now, as a kid the girls prancing around in tiny outfits and the curious artstyle that I was- at the time- unfamiliar with, kept me coming back.
But that didn't make me a fan of anime, really. Years went by before I started getting into anime on DVDs as opposed to the generally watered-down products that make it to television. I believe it was either Love Hina or Excel Saga, as I got into those at around the same time.

It is a timeless classic, to me at least.
The edited version was pretty poor in quality, but that doesn't make the whole series horrible.

Pirates of Dark Water wasn't an anime, Overlord Evan, but it was a failed attempt by Hanna-Barbera to tell a unifed, serilized storyline, ala most anime TV series like Macross etc. The last episode never aired, which is why I call it a failure, depite the fact that was actually pretty good, especially the animation.
