The point of a quote game, though, is to take something that is either unique to a movie or show, or something somewhat obscure that sounds like only one person could possibly say, but may not necessarily ring any immediate bells.

Actually, the Asuka quote was a good one. Very unique to only Eva, so there's no possibility of confusion or multiple-show answer possibilities. It's fairly EASY to get, but it was still the right idea. Kiba's current one is a good one too, becuase that sounds fairly unique to a particular show. I don't KNOW it, but it doesn't sound like anything I've heard from other anime either. Kiba and I seem to have a lot in common about remembering useless bullshit quotes from anime. Stuck in your brain whether you want it to or not. The voices just keep talking and...

Where was I? Anyway, "hard" quotes are good as long as there is no possibility that it could come from some other show. The other problem with anime quote games is that you HAVE to be specific about what kind of quote it is. We covered this way back on the first few pages. The significance of whether the quote is a subtitled translation (and specific to fansub or domestic release sub), a dub quote, or a raw translation of your own accord. The differences between those are absolutely staggering. I can use a quote from a fansub that someone else saw dubbed as an entirely different quote. Perhaps the same "idea", but not an exact same translation.

An example is Shinji's line after stroking his wang in End of Eva. The translation of what he's saying can be construed in so many ways that it's hard to get an exact translation. However, if you heard any of them, you'd probably know who said it. Even the dub quote ("I'm so ****ed up") can probably be easily traced back to Shinji.

However, you can get entirely different lines from various medium. Fujisawa-sensei in El Hazard comes to mind. One of my favorite quotes from the show was actually a dub only quote that had nothing to do with the original line, but the original line is so boring, that I appreciate the dub track better, despite the utter change in meaning.

The scene is when he and Makoto are first in El-Hazard and he's just discovered he's out of booze. He laments about not having alcohol right when Princess Rune Venis is screaming from being attacked by Bugrom. The original line is something akin to:

"Now someone else is having problems!"

But the dub line is:

"Aw shit, someone else is out of alcohol."

I die everytime I hear that line. It's so farkin' hilarious and appropriate to what Fujisawa is doing at the time that I can't help but smile.

Anyway, you get the gist. Keep the quotes specific and try to make sure they're not translatorily vague.
