I think there's a pretty obvious reason why there are no ugly girls in anime (that is if you don't count any of the female cast of Initial D), that's so glaringly obvious I'm not going to bother typing it.

Besides, there are ugly / and or fat chicks in anime. Most of the time they're not the main character, if that's what you mean. But they're there. Anime has it's share of non attractive chicks and guys.

Frankly, the kind of superficial nonsense that goes into anime bores me. I would like to see a no so attractive girl win the day sometime. All these perfect chicks getting bagged by ugly / average guys can only go so far before I get totally bored of it.

Personality is my biggest strong point. Good looking is secondary to that.

Well the main problem is,
1. boys want to see pretty girls. ("I want her...")
2. girls want pretty girls to look up to. ("I want to be like her...")

Of course, females who feel otherwise for point #2 are free to oppose, but from what's passed on to me by female friends, that's about it.

Intentional ugly characters, and being protagonists at that, can only win the day with mature people who want something that is not at skin level. And we all know even adults are still incredibly superficial.

Have a look at Paranoia Agent for a range of beautifully drawn ugly people. Awesome.

Because they are animated characters... they're not meant to be realistic which is why liberties are taken with their hair colour, eye colour (eye shape!)as well as sometimes exaggerated body shape to make it more appealing to the market.

Occassionally they'll make a anime with characters that look more realistic like Boogiepop Phantom. If you take a look at the country in which anime is created... there aren't a great deal of overweight girls there.

There was a fat girl on the first season of sailor moon thought only in a very few eps. We all know why fat girls aren't shown in anime or manga. Same reason you don't see many of them in american shows. Once again they aren't the image that sells.

my guess is that they are too hard to draw and they take too much time to color in...Actually it's true. People look nice not because they have something extra, but rather they lack facial flaws. So it's alot more work to deliberately draw somebody ugly with all those extra details that depicts imperfection.

well i dont think this counts but in Samurai Champloo episode 15, theres a bit where Fuu eats a lot and she looks like this huge ball of ... But anyways I don;t think the problem is there aren't enough ugly characters in anime but there aren't many "normal" looking characters in anime. A character is either next to perfect or really ugly. In general this is not very realistic but even in live action movies and tv shows they tend to cast only pretty people. I guess it is because we care too much about image and we don't want to see normal characters. It would be nice for a change.

I can't really say any anime character(s) is ugly, unless I didn't like the artwork, then yeah. However, in most anime the minor/background characters that pop up are usually not as attractive as the main ones. I said "not as attractive" so I'm not labeling them as being "ugly" just so you clearly understand me.

Not to go off on a tangent that has nothing to do with the thread and not to bash you for your grammatical observance, 'cause I can be a bit of a stickler for it at times too. But I think most people would agree and expect a certain number of time saving abbreviations (both in words and type) when reading and posting. Thus, the wide spread of use ellipses (which I might point out you, yourself utilized), line breaks and hyphen/bullets pointing, etc.

anyway, for a scholarly explanation (yeah right me. sarcasm dripping. XD) first and foremost, in this popular culture we have, showcase people (or in this case, women) that are near perfect. one main obviously glaring reason why>>>> it sells. it brings more money.

men wish these pretty, sexy gals are their girlfriends, and women wish they have the same body as theirs. admit it, these near-perfect bodies and looks are what we consider as beautiful because, well, as the cultivation theory goes, this is being taught to us since we are mere children.

anime is no exception to this.

personally, there is nothing wrong with being fat or chubby. it is not the premise of who you really are.just be the best person you could be. i bet that is what most anime is trying to teach us. ^-^

It's quite simply because main characters need to stand out. This often shows in anime with a school setting, the main character either gets away with not wearing the uniform or has such extravagant hair or some other feature that he or she stands out from the rest. Simply because that as a main character you don't want him/her to be lost in a crowd of people. Hence why looking "normal" is often reserved for random people in the street in anime & manga.

The problem with anime is that it follows what is pretty and what is fashion... It does so in order to sell. It's the famous formula. Cute chicks get people's attention so that's what they use.

However, I think a good story overlooks the looks... If people stopped thinking only about the looks and considered the whole story and its good and bad points... we'd have better anime-story quality.
