fav anime movie........i would have to say Kikis Delivery Service. Only because i can relate to how it feels for a girl to go out into the world and discovering herself.

And welcome to AA Yurika Star, have fun and play nice with the kiddies. j/k

Flaming? That's a fairly new concept around here, most people just :Poke: or :hump ... so watch out...

I guess I have to say Princess Mononoke. I like the feel of the movie and what's more I can show it to people who don't like anime that much and they'll like it:) There may be better stuff out there, but my opinion on this one has stayed pretty constant. There are a lot of other good movies too though; this one doesn't really win by much.

Welcome to Anime Academy. =)

*Whispers quietly into Yurika Stars ear*

Beware the welcome humping! =P

Hmm, as for my favourite movie. . . I haven't seen too many so I guess perhaps. . . Perfect Blue. Maybe Utena the Movie, Aa! Megami-Sama the movie, or Nadesico the movie as well. I don't watch too many of the movies, just the series. . . So they're all good. =P

Kunnichuwa to AA! Most of us here are quite harmless, but a handful....hmm, just watch your back! (literally!) ^_~
Fave movie... oooh so many, so many but I'd have to say Perfect Blue: it gives such an psycholigical insight to many different issues and there's some blood and gore, so you got to love it mwwa-ha-ha!! ("Ug, kill Mimarin... Ahh")

I am new also, although I seem to be in stage 3 and moving into stage 4 of fanboy evolution. I love this site, because I moved through all the previous stages of evolution, and am now saying "Why did I buy all those DBZ videos?" and smaking myself in the head. My favorite anime so far is Akira, but I haven't been exposed to most of it. What does everybody recommend? One other question, what is otaku quotient, and how can I raise mine? Thanks.

My initial reaction was Knockin' On Heaven's Door. But then I thought about Spriggan, so one of those.

Perfect Blue, Totoro and Grave of the fireflies are fighting for that position... Knocking on Heaven's door is lagging behind, somewhere in the fourth place...

But for some odd reason, I'm saying perfect blue.

All Miyazaki movies, omg I love those movies!

But I think Laputa and GotF edge ahead.

I'm going to have to agree with this guy. :D

Grave of the Fireflies is only behind Perfect Blue because I watched it last out of three anime DVDs, and it was so damned sad. So I had to do something to get outta that funk after watching GotF.

1. Sen to Chihiro ( just have to be the best Miyazaki film ever...)
2. Only Yesterday (even more peaceful than Totoro...what can I say?)
3. Whisper of the Heart (true masterpiece....)
4. My Neighbor Totoro (i've seen this one a long time ago yet my love for it never decreases)
5. Grave of the Fireflies (not my type, but it is so good....)

and all other Ghibli films have a sacred place in my heart...

I also have not seen many of the proclaimed movies such as Perfect Dark and Grave of the Fireflies. Therefore, my choice is Knockin On Heaven's Door, with Mononoke Hime in a close second.

It's a tie.. I like Endless Waltz, and I like Akira. Princess Mononoke comes in second.

I'd love to name an anime movie as my favorate, but i can't due to lacking in commitment skills.

I fall in love with almost every anime-film i've watched recently.
And rubbish things i've been purging from my mind.

But i haven't seen any bad animes recently. Funny that.

Aww, look my first ever thread, well now i feel like posting in it ^^
My fave movie is Kikis Dellivery Surface or Perfect Blue.
Kikis taes #1 spot though, cause its soo cool and sweet, and doesnt resort to violence or other things so abundant in western movies.

Yuri-kun's first thread....and hey, I haven't welcomed you yet! Welcome to AA!

Anyways, there are some changes in my favorites now. Long gone were the days of my Spirited Away obsession. The orders are now as followed:

1. Only Yesterday
2. Grave of the Fireflies
3. Tonari no Totoro
4. Whisper of the Heart
5. Kiki's Delivery Service

I still like Spirited Away a lot though. But I ain't infactuated with it. When the Cat Returns comes to HK, I will probably be infactuated with that for a while as well.

Funny how a full weekend of Ghibli can do to a person.

Naota

There is always a Ghibli movie at the top of the most popular rentals at the store I work at. This month it happens to be Sen to Chihiro no Kamakakushi, though an excelent movie, I wouldnt say it is my favorite. That honor still goes to Grave of the Fireflies, and I know I previously said Laputa: Castle in the Sky aswell, but I hadn't seen Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind at the time. GotF and NotVotW at an equal par as my favorite movies.

Oh yeah, I noticed I didnt say welcome Yuri, its a bit late but Welcome to AA old buddy! :sWeatdrop

However, I'll prolly watch Laputa: Castle in the Sky again soon, and it will prolly find its way back into the favorite spot, I am a sucker for any Ghibli film I watch (even Chihiro found its way to the top). So I think it would be safe to say the one that sticks at the top, always, is Grave of the Fireflies

lol Yuri-kun's first thread =D

Well, My fav movies would be Cowboy Bebop - Knockin' on heaven's door, Initial D 3rd Stage, Rurouni Kenshin - Requiem for the Ishin Patriots, AMG - The Movie and Perfect Blue.

And another movie I really enjoyed is SIN. I know this movie is just a pile of trash but I'm a die hard fan of the game and seeing the characters in an anime was simply awesome! But why did JC have to die at the beginning? :whine JC + Blade = Ownage!

I'd gotta say either Lupin III: Legend of the Twilight Gemini or Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie

Movies like Jin-Roh and Perferct Blue are very rare jems in anime, espessially for those genres. Poor poor Mima...

Akira was ok but it tried to cover too much information from the manga into a 2 hour movie. So that didnt work ut. I say it needs an OVA. Jin Roh was realy good. I like every part of it. I hope I see more liked it in the near future.

The best anime movie imo, was Ninja Scroll. It was the first anime I saw that wasnt a glorified american dub (i.e. dbz pokemon). That movie will always have a special place in my dvd collection.

Cowboy Bebop Movie, Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke and DEFINITELY End of Eva! It may be more of an OVA to the series, but its still technically a movie. GOTF is really amazing, but too depressing for me to really get into it.

Grave of the Fireflies isnt a Miyazaki, it was his friend Takahata. But still Ghibli.

Anyway, my favorite movie is a Miyazaki, Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

Kimagure Orange Road: I Want to Return to That Day. I really loved this series. Many times I am left unsatisfied by the end of the series, but with this one, it was exactly what I wanted to see. A wonderful conclusion to a wonderful series.

I also recently saw the first Inu-Yasha movie and I have to say that I was quite pleased with it. So a close runner-up.

Everything that Miyazaki has done I've thoroughly enjoyed, Totoro, Nausicaa and Mononoke Hime being at the top of the lisst. But,I think that my favorite movie would have to be Laputa: Castle in the Sky. It was a bit slow at first, but the scenery on Laputa was gorgeous, not to mention Hasaishi's music was on the top of his game. Good movie all around.

To me this just has to be Grave of the fireflies. It has such a strong atmosphere of sad and depressive emotions, that not only do I feel a certain connection with it, but also enjoy viewing something this powerful.

End of Evangelion was a brilliant movie too, but it falls short of Fireflies, since so much has to be known in advance. I would much rather see it as a longer episode of that magnificent seires instead.

I have to add another movie to my list, even though it's one that's quite unpopular on this board. I personally loved Metropolis. To me it felt like Tezuka's take((or Rintaro's rather, he directed the movie)) on the Asimov-ian style of Robot literature. I found the characters to be completely charming, and was quite impressed with the animators ability to make Tezuka's art style fluidly mesh with the CGI backgrounds.

Normally I wouldn't have made a post like this, but I initially posted in this thread over a year ago, so I figured it was time for an update.

You took the words right out of my mouth, Le Bread. I loved the movie, and the characters were sooo charming. Everyone in the audience loved the movie when we saw it for the first time at FanimeCon; it received a standing ovation. How is that for a good review? :)

Well, my favourites are:
- Mononoke Hime
- Blood
- Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust
- X (I'm a CLAMP fan, but I still agree that the X movie isn't that great if compared to the TV series or the manga.)

GotF is my favorite anime Movie. It is just great, I don't see how many people couldn't like it. Emotion, art, music, everything really mixed well together.

I agree with Vicious0, GotF is just such a great movie, not just in anime but one that stands above most live action movies in terms of emotion and sending an anti-war message. Besides GotF i would also pick any Ghibli movie as they are all wonderfully imaginative and with very memorable characters

Hmmmm.... not to be mean or anything, I was wondering if this person was kidding or not because:

1. Poke'mon is not a movie, there have been a few movies but I really don't see how these could fit in to anyones "Best Anime Movie Ever" Catagory.... With the execption of them being 5+ years old.

2. Anime- A style of animation developed in Japan, characterized by stylized colorful art, futuristic settings, violence, and sex.

Hmmmmm.... Last time I checked "Spongebob Squarpants" as kitty calls it does not fit under the anime catagory and is also NOT a movie.

3. Comeon, I'm starting to get scared here, somebody needs to help her!!!

I dont think so because if you havent seen the series the movie doesnt make any sense.

The best movie is or should I say are: Wings Of Honneamise tied up with Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade

Sure Grave of the Fireflies is amazing, but WOH and Jin Roh are more enjoyable to watch than Grave of the Fireflies.

Yeah, that is true. If I was going for enjoyable it would have to be WoH and Jin Roh or Knock'n on Heavens door. But my favorite anime movies has to be GotF. I don't think he was asking best, although I would probably have said the same thing. :p

But yes, you are right, WoH is very enjoyable, although it had a couple of weird scenes (I.E. The Rape scene... wtf?)

EVA confused me to no end, that anime gave me a headach. Laputa cracked me up, that girl's braids got their own brains. Then there was the Kenshin movies... I fell asleep watching them. I like Spirited Away, Haku's dragon form was beautiful. But my fav. anime movies had to be the 7 Detective Conan movies. And yes, they've made seven of them. All which were worth watching.

End of Evangelion, but Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is a really close second.

I'd call it Knockin' on Heaven's Door, but since I saw it in the states, it's stateside title is Cowboy Bebop: The Movie.

I recently saw Grave of the Fireflies and I must say I was moved to tears. I think it's one of the greatest anime films of all time. I really enjoy Ghibli Films as well, like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.

Ninja Scroll has to be my #1, that's an all time great in my opinion.

Others I'd put high, Cowboy Bebop Knockin' on Heavens Door, Samurai X Trust/Betrayal(though I think they might be OVA's, it's close enough), Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, the first two inu-yasha movies, and the Initial D movie.

Samurai X is the Kenshin OVAs, that take place before the television series.

I would think my favorites would be;

Only Yesterday - One of the most beautiful, indepth, movies I've ever seen. If you ever want to watch something truly simple yet deep, or something that shows the beauty of life, check this out.

Pretty much anything by Studio Ghibli - But, especially Grave of the Fireflies, Laputa, Only Yesterday, and Kiki. And not Nausicaa. Ever.

Beyond the Clouds, The Promised Place - The most beautiful, stunning movie I've ever seen in terms of art and music. The atmosphere it creates is just stunning, and it actually uses the music to create mood. To boot, it's an excellent story. It's by Shinkai Makoto, the genius who did Voices from a Distant Star

Utena: Adolescence - This movie is trippy, but it is -good-. It also have the best music I've ever heard in a movie. If you feel like watching through a movie full of interpretations and subtle hints while still getting great characters and overall theme, check this out.

Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer - Tying in with the series, this movie takes the comedy and lovable nature of Urusei Yatsura, and adds something a bit deeper. This is also a great movie to just enjoy without having to cry your eyes out.

Samurai X is the Kenshin OVAs, that take place before the television series.I think you are referring to this (http://www.animeacademy.com/finalrevdisplay.php?id=1). But the original poster mentioned that it was a movie. Trust & Betrayal is an OVA (unless OVAs are somehow also being lumped under movies.)

Only Yesterday - One of the most beautiful, indepth, movies I've ever seen. If you ever want to watch something truly simple yet deep, or something that shows the beauty of life, check this out. This is my second favorite Takahata. The flashback scenes are a joy to behold, though grownup Taeko isn't as interesting as childhood Taeko. The pacing is a little too slow at some points, but the ending is just phenomenonal.

It's by Shinkai Makoto, the genius who did Voices from a Distant StarI thought the storyline was way too spare for the running time. There was quite a lot of dead space (what others might call "mood") and the quick passage of several years at a time created a very disjointed feeling. The animation is stunning however.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake.

To tell you the truth, I honestly didn't find the pacing to be a problem in that movie. (Whisper of the Heart, on the other hand...) However, I can understand it just being too boring for some people. Still, it emphasizes for me why I feel Takahata to have some of the best developed movie characters.
As for the Ghibli movies, I love them all, true. (Besides the aforementioned Nausicaa, and The Cat Returns, which I have yet to see.) However, Nausicaa was just too much of a disappointment to me. You see, I can understand how this could be a great movie to some people. I can even see why. But, here's the thing. When I read the Nausicaa manga, there was absolutally no question in my head that this was the best manga I'd ever read, and it still is. That's not to say it's my favorite, but I still think it's by far the best.
So, to me the movie was a huge disappointment. I can understand its appeal, but the manga spoiled it for me. I just can't get past the shortcomings in it compared to the manga, unfortunatly.

On The Promised Place? To tell you the truth, I really have nothing to say to that. While I found it to be amazing and insightful, I can get how your point of view. I guess it's a take it or leave it thing.

I think it aged the least gracefully out of all his movies. And like Miyazaki, I had a major problem with the ending. I read parts of the first volume of the manga but lost interest. To be honest, I've never been a huge manga person. But I have heard often about how much better it is than the movie. Which is expected, that a piece of work which consumed more than a decade of Miyazaki's life would have far more depth and substance than a two hour movie.

I was talking about the pacing in Only Yesterday, and how I thought it was fine. So I was implying (if badly) that I wasn't happy with Whisper's timing. I actually love that movie- it's just that I find the last 10 minutes to be badly paced, and way to fast.

That's quite true. Although I still find it a bit sad that me (and many others) just can't enjoy the movie because the manga was so good.

And yep, I was not too thrilled with the ending initially. It seemed way too rushed and out of left field. After repeat viewings, it's grown on me a bit, and I've come to accept Miyazaki's explanation (http://nausicaa.net/miyazaki/mimi/faq.html#proposal).

Well, I was actually a bit more upset with the rest of the pacing, and how quickly it concluded. To tell you the truth, I liked the marriage proposal. It's still nice to hear his explaination though. Thanks for the link.

Great Kamisama! Grave of the Fireflies not only has to be one of the greatest anime movies (my personal favorite) but also has to be one of the greatest animated masterpieces of all time. It's one of the most heart-breaking tragedies on film: even more so if you think about the children that really had to go through such hardships during that horrible period. This is my favorite movie!
