This is one I use alot: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html
Its awesome... has a search engine in romanji like you were looking for (click on "search for words in dictionary")... kinda hard to navigate in is the only prob...

I always use Jeffrey's Online Dictionary:
http://dict.regex.info/cgi-bin/j-e/dict
You can search in English or romaji, and then reload the page with the results in kanji. It's the best dictionary I've found online.

I'm glad for this thread. I used to use JEDI,
http://poets.notredame.ac.jp/cgi-bin/jedi
But it suddenly disappeared just this week. Now I have other, recommended resources!

That's the dictionary that I primarily use... and since the romanized terms I'm looking up are as vague as they come, it's good to see that even if I'm are slightly off in my assertion, the dictionary will still pick up on it.

I've been looking for a dictionary that doesn't give me Kanji characters, but ABC alphabets instead, ex: when I type "dog," it should give me "inu". Do you know any like that ?

The one that I go to a lot is http://www.animelab.com/anime.manga/dictionary/. I find that it's pretty good, even though it doesn't have ALL of the japanese words.

I typically use Kanjidict 1.6.3.3 for most things.

Also, as someone probably already posted, I use Jim Breen's WWWJDIC Japanese-English Dictionary Server too. Mainly Kanji Lookup and Multi-Radical Kanji tools.

Use Wakan !!! wakan.manga.cz/ (http://wakan.manga.cz/),, i have said this before,, its free, good and useful, some nasty bugs, but try it yourself. If i know some kanji and have some questionable knowledge of japanese is because of this dictionary.

I'm a big fan of jisho.org It's been a while since I've used it, but if I recall you don't have to be able to type in Japanese. Also, if you use Firefox, there's an add-on (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2471) that will translate any kanji merely by scrolling over it. It's very helpful and would strongly recommend it if you're going to be reading a lot of Japanese text online.
