I wasn't into anime when I was younger, so I really can't address this one firsthand. But i can see how it could happen. I mean people have crushes on characters on tv and movies all the time, even thought the actors are often vastly dissimilar to the characters they play.

Hmmm...yes many. But the biggest one I think was Dilandau from Escaflowne. I loved him soooo much. Like, really felt something for him. I watched Escaflowne the series 5 times and the movie 14 times on pure need-to-see-dilandau whims. number 1 would have to be Ai Tanabe from PLANETES... shes just to cute... its hard not to like her...

Others worth mentioning are Sakaki from Azumanga Daioh, Mutsumi from Love Hina, Chi from Chobits, and probably most recently Ayase from Midori no Hibi...

I don't think having a crush on an anime character's any weirder than imagining being in an anime. Or feeling sorry when a character dies or gets hurt. Having a crush on an anime character is just an extension of the same empathy, or whatever, that anyone who enjoys anime feels when they're watching it.

If you are so mature to even think you comprehend human emotion then step forward. Seriously a crush first has to be defined before it can be determined whether immature or mature. If it is just that a crush... then its because the person has low self value and therefore is seeking to find somehting greater then themselves. If it is love, or an obssession then it ranges between psychotic and beauty. If a man is in love with an anime character, because he/she feels passion for its belief systems, and its philosphies then in my humble opinion I believe that can be percieved as a true love of an ideal, which is far from immature, because someone has determined in life exactly what they want. If someone is in "love" because they are obssesive over a characters beauty in art, without stepping back to realize its a piece of art and not an animate object, or if someone feels that they wish they could actually be this person, or be with this person, then even if this person is mature, they have then went onto the path of a horrible psychosis. Some instances have been known where people actually come to believe they are a fictional character, and carry there lives on as such. This is disturbing but I am sure it comes as one of the diseases that society itself carrys

And out of all of this , I am sure Eri just wants to be a porn star with an awful lot of group sex and degradation of sexy women, and DH the same......the bad thing is that they are the most mature here, because they are not lost enough to use a word like love, when they mean ****. I don't think there is anything wrong with dreaming, I live in my head a lot of the time, but it is definitely unhealthy to entertain dreams that are not only unrealistic, but are actually physically impossible to acchieve. For example it may be impossible for a certain person to actually become the General of the entire Army, but in striving to do so, someone may at least partially acchieve their goal and become a Colonel or a 2-Star General or something like that. The same can be said about love and relationships. In trying to have a relationship with a girl you may get into better shape, get a job, and try to improve yourself just to have a relationship with her. So even if things don't work out, you've still gained something from the process. What can you acchieve by dreaming about a relationship with Tomoyo?

I'd also like to say that sex may sound lame, no I take that back, sex often is lame, but bad sex is usually a matter of not being intimate enough with the person your having sex with. Perhaps you just haven't ever met a girl or guy who you feel you can truly love, but it's a wonderful feeling and I honestly don't think that the fantasy of a fake relationship with an anime character can really compare with real affection for an actual person.

I'm not quite sure what you mean, here. There's a difference between being emotionally invested in anime and having a crush on a drawing.

I have a very over-active imagination - I get ridiculously involved in anime, movies, cartoons, TV series. I don't think it's wrong to find anyone attractive (be it through a fictional live action medium or in real life), be it female or male...but I absolutely can't wrap my brain around people literally having crushes on a cartoon character. I get that anime characters in particular can be aesthetically pleasing, and I have no problem with that...but once you break the boundary of simply admiring a character's visual appearance to being "in love" with them and actually letting your family know this (in RHF's case), that's where I draw the line and shake my head in disbelief.

I wouldn't mind quite so much if this didn't wander into even more questionable territory with the whole lolicon thing. I don't know how prevalent that is in this thread because I can't really be bothered re-reading every batshit post, but finding pre-pubescent characters hot in particular really disturbs me. They're children, for god's sake. They may just be drawings, but it still doesn't quite expel that general pedotastic vibe. It IS wrong to find little anime girls attractive and IS something you should be ashamed of.

In any case, if I were to have a crush, it would be on the ideal that an anime character represents. More of a "if I could find a person with the personality of character X, I would so date them", which is no different to people who do that when they read a book or watch a movie.

For example, if I ever met a person with traits like those from Madoka of KOR or Yukino from Kare Kano, I would feel attracted to them, because they represent the type of values and personalities that I like. But that is fairly different from saying "I so want to sexx0r Yukino".

Because men like to follow the model of a provider, protector, and be the stronger of the pair. Most men, and people in general, have issues with confidence when growing up, and those character types makes it 'easy' for them.

But I don't think it's the frailty in general that attracts them. It's just the Pet like devotion that they display.


I've always been in love with women in full bloom. Particularly strong ones that have no problem protecting herself and others.


As much as I share your taste, it does have its downside. In real life, independent women can (not all of them of course) become too indepedent and narcissistic to establish any stable relationship. They may feel chained by relationships and can become depressed when they feel they can't explore their potentials because of it.

As for crushes in Anime characters. Hmm, I'd say I had found some of them visually and characteristically appealing, but that's what they are supposed to be. I mean, how else are they supposed to attract viewers if they have Man-Faye posing as a love interest... (Unless you're aiming for comedy...uuh). People who know me should know I pretty much day-dream 24/7 and I can fantasize about being with fictional characters. I think it's fine to have a certain level admiration, but it can't be the same as a real 'crush'.

A real person is much more complex than any fictional character. It's the fun in digging deep down beneath the surface, learning the flaws and specialties of the person, and being able to accept those traits that make people really fall in love with one another. Fictional characters' traits will always be static. It will always be the traits that you want, and that is no longer a 'crush' but just satisfying your own fantasies.

Besides, real boobs are touchable and round... Anime boobs will always be flat... Unless they make 3D interactive anime... Which shouldn't be too far off... Hmmm...

I've never had much luck with real guys, so I've developed a policy of fantasizing about ideal ones in the meantime. I used to be much more prone to lusting after animated guys in particular-- at age 12-14ish, first getting into anime, I had a thing for most of the Gundam Wing boys and even got a little defensive at the mention of them being romantically involved with other characters in the show (though this is probably more a case of me being jealous of pretty girls in general who always get the guy). I'm not sure at what point this stopped, but eventually I realized, "Um, these guys aren't attractive-- they have huge eyes and I'm pretty sure they can't kiss with that tiny mouth." There's a certain safety in attaching to fictional people-- they can't disappoint you and they can't reject you. There's nothing wrong with finding an anime character attractive (it's hard to avoid when 90% of them are made to be that way), or even thinking that, if you met someone with that character's personality, you'd like to go out with them.

That said, I think it's literally impossible to fall in love with an animated person, or any person you haven't at least had a conversation with. Love involves wanting to make someone happy, wanting to protect, support and be around them, and also a large degree of some magic chemical connection that you just can't have with someone who doesn't even know you exist (or doesn't exist him/herself). If you believe you're in love with an anime character, you aren't. You might be obsessed, you might find them an ideal mate for you, and you may even wish intensely that they were real so you could hold/bone/kiss/whatever them. But you aren't in love.

Second, I agree with Emeraldas, pretty much. I think it should be assumed that any random fangirl's so-called "love" is in the end just deep obsession anyways, and that was what I was referring to when talking about "love" anyways. So, saying that these people in love with fictional or unapproachable people are insane isn't really right; they're just deeply obsessed (for the most part), and if that's a problem or pathetic to you, so be it. I get insanely obsessed with random nonsense on a regular basis, so I can understand.

Well... I think its pretty normal... An anime character one has a crush on is a representation of one's ideal partner... So, I believe its quite understandable... And I'd probably agree with you. Though it's easier for me to understand people who are infautuated with celebrities simply because, though a relationship with one of them is almost impossible for the average person, at least they are real flesh and blood people with real personalities.

Having a crush on an anime character is fine; they are designed to be attractive, physically and/or personality wise. Having the same for a celebrity is also fine; they didn't become so popular because they were repulsive. Either case becomes a mental disease when taken beyond a certain point.
