Anime wise, I'm leaning towards Revolutionary Girl Utena.
Manga, Maybe Battle Royale. Just maybe..

It's hard to say, really. I've seen some good ones, but I know there are much better ones that I haven't seen (or so I've heard:p).
Kare Kano was good. The manga, anyway. Haven't seen the anime. Another manga romance I really liked was Love Hina.
And I've always had a soft spot for Shiro and Aina from Mobile Suit Gundam: 08th MS Team.

maison ikkoku but this is the only manga i've read that has a more serious love thingy

Hmm..... Kanon. I always had a soft spot for Kanon. So much drama *sob*. As for manga love stories.... I don't read much love story mangas, so I'll stick to chobits.

I'd have to go with Kimagure Orange Road. Especially if you're seen the TV series and the OAVs.
The buildup to the first movie makes the first movie that much more of an impact. Orange Road is probably the only time I've seen someone not named Miyazaki, Oshi, or Anno do drama right.
Believable love story.

For pure love goodness, I would stick with Ai Yori Aoshi and Love Hina. They are two series that you can believe won't let you down.

Kare Kano. I love the characters and the fact that they make the relationship interesting without all the I hate you/I love you stuff.

Hm, although I would say Kare Kano, I wasn't to particularly impressed with the love story between Arima and Yukino, rather the great relationship between Tonami and Sakura. This was the best one and I wish that it was futher developed.

Kare Kano, RK Trust and Betrayal, and Chobits. I found all to be good love stories.

I like Gravitation, Fushigi Yuugi, and Midori No Hibi. How is that for a wide range of different types?
Anime: Kare Kano and Maison Ikkoku. Those two were no brainers
Manga: A.I. Love You, Kare Kano, Love Hina, Chobits. Those also were pretty easy to decide.

Most of you chose mediocre romances at best. Love Hina, Ai Yori Aoshi... meh.
Good stuff:
Kare Kano
Maison Ikkoku
Kimagure Orange Road
Touch
H2
Miyuki
Candy Candy
Living Game
and even I''s are better.

Love Hina
no doubt
if anything is close, it would be KareKano

CCS the series/CCS the movie 2: the sealed card-Sakura and Syaoran are so damn cute!
Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal-omg it was so sad. Tomoe and Kenshin 4-eva!
gawd, i have to stop with the "4-eva"
*EDIT*: I also want to add Patsu and Sheeta from Castle in the Sky, they were so damn cute as well.
Kimagure Orange Road and Maisson Ikkou. Other "newer" romances shrink in front of these two. :)

One of the new anime out there that seems to be good (although in a really weird way) is Koi no Kaze.

Love stories?
/me tries to recall something that would resemble a love story...
Hmm...well if it counts, I'll have to pick Jin-Roh. That's how I like them love stories: sad and tragic.
If it doesn't count, then all I can pick is Ah! My Goddess :sweat - OVA and movie.

I'd choose Marmalade Boy because teh love story was so hilarious. So many turns. However, I have this thing for G Gundam, and I really like their coupling Domon and Rain. It feels real to me..
LamiaDeMort
05-01-2004, 03:55 PM
My choice might be sort of strange...
The divorced couple (the scientist and the detective) from Wolf's Rain. It doesn't have the same epic quality as say, RahXephon or Escaflowne, nor the cuteness of Chobits but there are elements I liked about it.
Although it was merely a subplot, it was what drove me on to complete Wolf's Rain. I enjoyed it for the reality it portrayed of modern relationships and the subdued tenderness. The career choice of a spouse and marriage itself can led unforeseen consequences in relationships. The love that these two slowly come to realize again is mature and not as highly romanticized or unrealistic as young love can be. The life that they attempt to create once they have reconciled is symbolic to me of what Wolf's Rain's Paradise SHOULD have been.
Thus the ending and the OVAs devastated the series for me.

I liked Escaflowne, Fushigi Yuugi, Ai Yori Aioshi, ect but my favorite is the Rurouni Kenshin OVA. It was just so sad and beautiful.

I usually don't get into romantic mangas, but Maisson Ikkoku was probably my fav. Ranma could also get kinda romantic when it wanted to, like during the Herb, Mint, and Lime saga.

I really love Hoshi No Koe, it was just so sweet, how they still loved each other even though they were so many lightyears away from each other, and their only way to communicate was through the cell-phone email. It was touching.

Mmm, romances.
Maison Ikkoku is by far the best I have seen. It makes you feel for the characters and gives plenty of let the relationships slowly grow. Very real, very endearing.
Hana Yori Dango also presents a great love story. It keeps you completely torn between the guys and you never know what's going to happen next, which is sometimes because it is absurd, but oh well. Still a very nice series, and gee, what an ending.

I think Van and Hitomi are my favorite, even though it took them a darn long time to realize it.
I also really like Miroku/Sango and Inuyasha/Kagome from Inuyasha. Although I will admit I haven't seen many romantic animes. I am kinda picky when it comes to that stuff because I hate sap (most of the time).

not really my personal favourite, but i was obsessed with the Shibahime/Kazuma love story from kare kano.
if anyone follows the manga, those two's relationship does become romantic eventually. i feel so lame for saying that the almost-fairytale ending to them appeals to me. it gives me the warm fuzzies. X3
anime-wise, i am a Miyazawa/Arima fan (also Kare Kano), because they started out so well. Arima's identity crisis did dampen my enthusiasm for the couple though, because he freaked me out. :x and mmm, i did like the Van/Hitomi (Escaflowne) before, but it wavered because i haven't seen the series lately. a distant memory made it look like old cheese to me, and i did want to strangle Hitomi. che!
manga-wise, Hanakimi, Paradise Kiss and Mars takes the cake. >D lurve Mizuki/Izumi (Hanakimi), because their "moments" make me swoon and drop dead on the floor. Paradise Kiss has a more realistic and bittersweet take on dysfunctional lovelifes of all the key characters.
Mars does remind me of one movie quote, so I'll let it speak for itself:
"... Love that overthrows life. Unbiddable, ungovernable, like a riot in the heart and nothing to be done, come ruin or rapture."
ooh yes, dramatic isn't it? ahahaha.

full metal panic...
its not shown as a love story, but their relationship after everything is over just seems so right. adding on is the comedy, action, comedy, the fact that the girl wasn't useless like in other animes (*cough*miaka*cough) and yeah...comedy:)
Cowboy Bebop, Ayashi no Ceres, Voices of a Distant Star; and on the more twisted side Ai No Kusabi & Angel Sanctuary (more manga than anime in regard to the latter).

Personally I gotta agree with all the people who said Chobits... Specifically the manga version ending... imo its gotta be one of the most touching love stories of all time... after all:
The most powerful love is the one where you know you will never get any from your partner (especially since Hideki is a virgin), but you dont care and still love your partner anyways...
CHOBITS MANGA ENDING
Because for those who didnt know, didnt understand, or whatever the ending of CLAMP's manga version: Hideki can never have sex with Chi, cause if he does then he basically reboots her and she loses all her memories (as well as basically kill all other persocons)...

Where's the love story in Honey and Clover? It's just a giant ball of unrequited affections that never quite untangles itself.
As for best love story: Maison Ikkoku. Takahashi should just give up with her long winded tales of fairy dust and write romance for a living. She's far better at it.

It's so..weird.I watched all the episodes of it though..Never Read it on manga.
The ending wasn't very satisfying. Also,During the whole story,It REALLY didn't show much 'love-growing-relationship-hints' between the guy and chii so I really don't understand why they end up loving each other..THE GUY WAS DREAMING ABOUT OTHER WOMEN!! So,I really don't understand much..

And I have seen a fair amount of anime in my lifetime, not some of the ones you'll have mentioned. But dont worry Im taking down notes on which ones to watch though.
Anyways for those skeptics of Eureka seveN, please understand it gets much better after the first couple of episodes. And I know that Renton is a whiner in the English version. To remedy this watch the fansubs on Youtube or something. If you havent given Eureka seveN a chance please consider it, just don't start watching it on Adultswim, you'd be coming in near the end of the season and you would ruin it for yourself.

Fushigi Yuugi (Though it can get annoying sometime between the romance in FY, I can't help but love Miaka and Tamahome's relationship and how far the two of them go to be together. So cute.)

Anime
Rurouni Kenshin: Tsuiokuhen - No brainer for those who's acquainted with me. In my books, Tomoe and Kenshin are a star-crossed couple that never meant to be. BEST.LOVE.STORY.EVER.
Manga
Kare Kano: Just love how Yukino's relationship with Arima develop from jealousy to mutual love. Aww...

Berserk.
Although One Piece is a close second; skillful storytelling is that series' greatest strength.

Sailor Moon is an amazing love story, the couple is boyfriend and girlfriend and dating during the series and gets married and has a child and has an amazing fantasy romance. I was a fan of this series back in 1995. 200 anime episodes, 18 manga volumes, the live action series.
Fushigi Yuugi The Fushigi Yugi manga is a lot longer than the anime. The manga is so great, the couple is dating and boyfriend/girlfriend during the series with lots of romantic kisses, getting engaged, getting married twice, having a child. A wondeful love story.

I like series where the couple are boyfriend and girlfriend and dating for a long time during the series with lots of romantic kisses and get married. I like series where the couple is dating fior a long time.

Fushigi Yuugi.
It's about perfect in my eyes. The romance was well done, I thought it was hilarious, I'm a huge fan of fantasy, several parts were extremely moving, the ending was climactic and probably my favorite final episode to a series, liked most of the characters, but even the ones I didn't care for had their moments.
Honorable mentions to
Kimagure Orange Road: A bit cheesy with all the gangs fighting with toys, but overall the Love Triange was done fantastically and was ended spectacularly in I want to return to that day.
Kare Kano: Minus the lackluster ending and recaps, it was well done, and the manga continues it well.
Maison Ikkou: Didn't finish the anime because I already read the manga, 3 times. After Fushigi Yuugi, it's my favorite love story and is probably close to par with FY anyway. If I had seen the anime and liked it as much, it'd probably be number 2.
