OK I have never watched anime in my life up until bout April 15th. I got into it from a friend who gave me Grave of the Fireflies and told me to watch it and I did. It was everything. I cried so much in that movie!!! I have watched it twice so far and there is things you miss if you ain't gonna watch it a 2nd time like the symbolism with the ghosts of the children and the fruit drops etc. Anyway from this movie cuz me to try out and order other anime on amazon.com and I did.........
Grave of the Fireflies: Everything if anybody here has never watched this plz get it!!! It is the sadest movie I ever seen in my life 10/10
My Neighbor Totoro: I cxouldn't believe how identical this was to Grave of the Firelfies. But instead of a really sad ending it was happy and nice. 9/10
Spirited Way: Heard how great this was but I was a lil disapointed fun ride though!!! 8/10
Kiki's Delivery Service: Love Kirsten Dunst and she plays Kiki's voice in this. the movie was good but it's definetly a kid movie but I loved it!!! 7/10
Castle in the Sky: Great adventure but it seems very dated and sorry i was very bored in this! average at best! 5/10
Cowboy Bebop the Movie: Have never seen the show and I think I never will. This movie was good. It had good action and some nice characters. 7/10
Memories: This would'a got a very horrible rating if it wasn't for the 2nd story called Stink Bomb. the other 2 stories were horrible and very borin. I was laughin and some parts and scared for the world at others great story but the other 2 ain't nothin.
4/10
Perfect Blue: Definetly somethin different great scary movie and Mimi was a great character! I loved her. The killing scenes were everything and this is a movie that you can keep watching over and over and learn new things. 9/10
Texnholyze: only have 1 dvd so far and I am lost. 5/10 (this probably will change)
With Hunter Robin: Have every dvd but the last which carries the last 2 episodes. The 24 episodes I saw ain't nothin really. I read bout how great this show was gonna be but I was very disapointed. I loved horror and supernatural movies and stuff like that but this show was horrible. People told me the story started to pick up half way thru and it did but people never told me only for two episodes it would!! Then it went right back to horrible. the character ain't that interesting! And I swear Robin has seen/fought around 5 witches that had that same telikinetic power!!!! Definetly disapointing!!! 4/10
Last Exile: This show is everything! I loved it! The best anime show I have seen at this time! the characters are so real I love all of them! the action is wow! The art and animation and FMV is a high point. The story is fabulous! I have to say this is the best anime show I have ever seen!!! Every episode is 10 star! the show is just perfect! I have only seen 16 episodes at this time though. 10/10

Great characters, especially Deedlit and her character development. Good music especially the opening song. Nice plot. The ending is a bit cheesy, but hey, it's 1990s. Lots of recycled animation and stills.
I'm in the progress of watching Chronicles of the Heroic Knight, which hopefully, will be much better.

They won't. Both RoLW are mediocre at best. Totally unoriginal characters (e viva stereotypes!), very stereotypical plot, nothing suprising. The only thing that stands out is the great soundtrack by Yoko Kanno. Sorry for this insert, but I just needed to vent myself.
Armitage III - an anime classic. Nice art, not such bad animation, a very nice soundtrack and an intruiging plot with a couple twists and great characters. A very good anime it sure is. 9/10
Gunsmith Cats OVA - it was okay. I read a couple albums of manga before I watched this, so I knew the characters and the atmosphere of the show. Nothing brilliant, but it was okay. 7/10

I'm half way through RoLW: CHK and I noticed awesome characters. The OVA had pretty cliched characters, but CHK is completely different. The plot is questionable but all in all, it's a fun anime to watch. :)

Awesome characters. Spark's loud mouth got annoying in the last quarter of the show, always yelling "I have to protect her!". We know that! Now go do it! Those that did not watch the OVA will miss out on Deedlit, Parn, and other character's depth because this doesn't provide it. Not the best plot, but the story was good. I didn't like the shift of focus from Parn/Deedlit to Spark/Neese's party, but I understood why they had to. The ending was satisfying and managed to provide some extra character development. Good music as usual. The varying animation was pretty bad but their were times when it improved... but then it got bad again. The art was nice, especially during scenes of contrast with lots of shadows. The ending had some spectacular use of shadows, too bad that wasn't prevalent throughout the series.
The opening sequence was quite misleading. The characters were depicted a bit differently; their clothes and coloring was different. The animation was great and it gave me the impression (upon viewing the first episode) that the anime was going to retain the same animation. Too bad it didn't, too bad really. What is with that red cloak/piece of cloth waving in the air?! The opening sequence raise more questions than the series itself!

If I hadn't seen the OVA before this, the TV series would've been an eternal project to finish.

"What I remember... is a blue sky... What I remember... are shining clouds... What I remember..." - Brandon Heat.
One of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite episodes (14) in all of anime. This anime was quite a shocker with its compelling characters, edge-of-your-seat plot, symbolism, themes, and music.
I didn't exactly like the supernatural concepts. It got especially ridiculous during Bear Walken's fight. They should have taken it down a notch.

Ugh. One of the most boring anime series in recent memory. I was about to fall asleep half the time and didn't really care what happened on screen.
The first two episodes had good animation and cinematography, but for some reason, the rest of the anime's animation was messing around in the dirt. Must have ran out of money or something.
The only character that I found interesting was Harada. His "Asakura" episode (6) was kind of moving and showed that he had some depth. Kuro was just there, he wasn't too much of a character and his jokes were almost always lame. Then again, it wasn't a very funny anime. I don't know what the hell Mikura is, but her fighting abilities are ridiculous.
The main plot was stupid. The filler episodes were even worse. I don't know about you guys, but I thought this anime was one ugly pile of trash.

It seems like ages since I've been able to finish complete series in relative succession. Anyway, recently:
Midori No Hibi - 7.5
At times it was hilarious, but I was really let down by the ending. Possibly a problem with the anime catching up with the manga. Oh, and Ayase is one of the better characters to come out of anime.
Rurouni Kenshin: Requiem for the ishin patriots - 6
Believe it or not, this is my first taste of Kenshin, and whilst the characters seemed pretty good, the story was pretty dull. It sort of made me want to watch more Kenshin, but hopefully the tv series is more exciting than this.
Planetes - 10
OK, as I may have mentioned on another thread, this show has quite a nice balance between drama, comedy, romance and even action. It's also one of the few shows that avoids using anime stereotypes, and manages to not be predictable as well. Just a really enjoyable experience!
Bubblegum Crisis: Tokyo 2040 - 6.5
Not one of the best shows I've seen. The last story arc was fairly boring, and very much a disappointment considering that it was pretty entertaining in the earlier episodes, and that the characters were more than decent as well. And the dub's pretty good as well.

We recently had an anime con, so I've just finished my swag of stuff......
NeiA_7: 7 I really liked this one, and I would have loved to give it more, but the story just didn't go anywhere, or rather, it took a couple of steps and then stopped. It was realy funny, though, especially the rival bath house episode.....
The Twelve Kingdoms (eps 1-5): 8 Another really good one, looking forward to continuing this series. It does seem to smack a bit of the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe though.
Angelic layer (eps 1-16): 8 Another series I'm enjoying, better than the manga, it expands on some characters that the manga didn't, and has a few more believable plot devices.
Just a quick question, does anybody know how many episodes there is in Yukikaze?

I guess it's time for an update.....
GTO - 92% if only I could treat my students this way!!!
Onegai Teacher - 84%
Chobits - 89%
Video Girl Ai - 88%
FLCL - 90% still not sure if it's flare or substance, but very enjoyable none the less
Samauri Champloo (1-7) - 91% Great characters and style so far.... now if we could just get a solid plot developed.....
Inu Yasha Movie 3 - 90% rated high for sentimental value.... still a fun ride!
Fushigi Yuugi - 88% a little long, but *sigh*... Tamahome
ROD ova - 88%
Boys Be - 70% not horrible, but so many better out there
Green Green - 75% should have stuck with pervy antics
E's Otherwise - 74% decent start, but just doesn't make it.... Kyo lovers (FB) rejoice; his twin exists!
As a side note, I am pleased to see someone else out there as impressed with Hana Yori Dango's story as I was! I've been having a hell of a time finding its equal! (P.S. Is the DVD only in English? The Japanese audio track isn't listed on its specs where I usually buy, and it would really be a waste without it.... some of my favorite voice acting is done on this one!)

Time to update a bit.
Gungrave
1-26 - 9.5. Oh my gosh, what a fantastic series this was, and such a great ending as well. I recommend everyone who hasn't seen this should check it out at once.
Narutaru
1-13 - 8. Starts off slow, goes up and down in the quality department - and then ep 11 comes. One of the most disturbing things I've ever watched and that's saying something.
Gravitation
1-10 - 8.5. This series really has it all: great characters, animation, music and the romance is handled beautifully. Only problem I have is it can't quite find the balance between drama and comedy. Nonetheless a great ride so far.

Gungrave Ep 1-11: 8. Frankly I don't see what the fuss is about so far, Brandon is an exceedingly dull character that's seriously lacking in personality, and his constant mumblings about loyalty and never betraying is getting to me. Then again, already knowing most of what's to happen I must say the story's pretty good. Lots more intelligent than Noir anyway

Noir
+ art, really stylish
+ music, a shame it was wasted here
= average story
- characters, almost everyone were dull and uninteresting, especially Kirika. The only exceptions were Altena and Peter(?)
-- action, horrible dirt. If someone manages to top episode sixteen's action scene at the beginning, I definitely do not want to see it.
--- the ending, inflicted almost physical pain.
I still don't see how they were supposed to be assassins, more like mass murderers. I was also interested in knowing how they managed to infiltrate all those high security mansions, but I never knew. Probably guns blazing, but no one just noticed. The music squeezes this series barely onto the 4 region.
Bubblegum Crisis
+ art, I really liked the old art style
+ voice acting, efficient and believable
= nice action, though sometimes the tables turned in a cliché (and unsurprising) way
- doesn't really go anywhere
- wasted potential with some characters
Nothing too outstanding but no big faults either. Some fights ended in an unconvincing manner. Largo was cool. All in all the best all-female (hero)cast I've seen, and I'm usually prejudiced against them (Noir didn't help). 7

Trigun: 8.5/10 is teh funniest ^^ despite what people say, I like the change in mood through the series, I don't think it was inconsistent at all. Loved the character of Vash and Wolfwood
Crest of the Stars: 8.5/10 Very enjoyable storyline, I enjoyed the relationship between Lafiel and Jinto. I'm also glad that instead of falling into the usual routine of "ordinary boy is transformed into bumbling fool in front of beautiful girl", Jinto is a very level-headed character.
Pretear: 8/10 Nice little mahou shoujo piece, too many characters for 13 episodes, full stars to the bald chaffeur though :D

+ Interesting use of different animation and storytelling styles, great concept, complex enough to keep the most cerebral anime-watchers entertained.
- Occasionally frustrating, like doing a puzzle with half the pieces missing. A few episodes in the middle wander from the plot and create a perplexing lag in an otherwise intense series.
Kino's Journey: 9/10
I'd say the most underrated anime to come out recently.
+ Fascinating look into different aspects of humanity, great characters and concept, beautiful music, unique animation style.
- Lack of an overarching plotline might throw some viewers off.

Ai Yori Aoshi (and Ai Yori Aoshi Enishi for that matter) get a measly 4. There really was no point to it... God waste of time though.
So far Azumanga Daioh I give 8.5 for the sheer hilarity. So far I can only say that the story is about the characters themselves (ala Ai Yori Aoshi) but seems to be doing well in that direction.
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed... after the 5th time I've seen it... still 10 out of 10!

Azumanga Daioh: The Very Short Movie - 6. Very short.
Noir - 8. Great action. Great OST. A severe shortage of frames.
Niea_7 - 9. The plot seems to go nowhere, and I did not laugh out loud during many of the jokes. But that was exactly its intention, and the result was a fine story of everyday life and one of the best satires out there. Abe Yoshitoshi does it again!

Yeah, but when one person has a scale of 1-5, and posts in a thread that distinctly says 1-10, it kind of looks like they didn't really like any of the anime they watched.
No problem if it's a different scale. Just perhaps it should be labelled, as in "I'll be scaling from 1-5" or "x/5."

Vision of Escaflowne: 9
The story was very involving and was paced well. The characters were 3-dimensional and their conflicts and decisions were believeable. I didn't really like the character design, but it was easy to get used to.
Now and Then, Here and There: 9
I loved the characters in this anime. The story was fascinating and dramatic. The Seiyuu were well-chosen, and the dialogue was realistic.
Ai Yori Aoshi: 7
Cheese, yes cheese. I love cheese. But I enjoyed every character in this anime.
Puni Puni Poemy: 8
Crazy, fast-talking, perverted fun.
Berserk: 9
Much more than a fighting anime, this one seems to have it all, except for comedy, maybe. Drama, fighting, romance.
Love Hina: 8
More cheese. I found this one to be quite humerous.
Haibane Renmei: 8.5
Visually beautiful. An interesting story and great characters that are well-developed.
FLCL: 9
Very versatile. Comedy, action, romance (sort of). Though the story is rather absurd, the plot and characters are well-developed.
I have a hard time giving anything a 10 because it would leave nowhere to go if I see something better, unless I start going to 11.

Everyone seems to have different rating schemes here.
More's the problem that the 1-10 scale isn't used effectively.
Also, I strongly recommend more people begin explaining why anime A gets grade B. If you don't know the person's taste, a simple numerical value doesn't help much. Adding decimals is understandable, but what's really the difference between say, 9.1 and 9.2?
(the following review may be overtly negative because of the span of time taken to watch it)
Full Metal Panic!
+ funny, at least I vaguely remember it being funny
= average mecha action
- bad other action
- virtually no background
- utterly boring characters
- the ending, predictable and contrived
Well, it was funny in the beginning. I think. The mecha action was pretty smooth all the way through to the three episodes in what's-its-name land. Otherwise the action sucked, relying more on inept enemies than anything else.
The Whispered deserve a special mention: they were nothing but magical girl deus-ex machinaes. Hey, if we can't outsmart or outperform them, let's outmagic them!
3
I was supposed have watched Midori no Hibi by the time I was going to write this but to no avail. I've been way too busy trying to make up ways to get rid of that selfish Midori, without either hurting the hand or her. The last isn't a priority though.
Hmh, I guess that constitutes a review, in a way...

Hmmm. I'll delve back a ways for more anime.
Vision of Escaflowne: 8/10
+ Great and interesting characters, convincing "other" world, good music, average animation.
- Some plot lines seemed contrived, story wandered in strange ways.
Full Metal Panic!: 9/10
+ Solid action (not relying on inept enemies), good drama and great comedy. Awesome interaction between the main characters.
- Unkillable villain might cause frustration.
Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu: 9.5/10
+ Comedy, comedy, comedy.
- Lack of drama and overarching plot might disappoint viewers looking for a continuation of the first season.
I'll be back.

Ahhh yes, I finally finished KOR after putting it off for so long...
Kimagure Orange Road
92%
Absolutely amazing, perhaps only second to the one and only Kare Kano (and the 1st KOR movie of course). Hilarious. Romantic. Dramatic. It's good at almost everything... except animation. Though it's not terrible, there are scenes that obviously need more work so that it's easier on the eyes. Memorable characters, a very clever ending, and some perverted male-oriented humor, Kimagure Orange Road is an unforgettable journey.
Kimagure Orange Road: I Want to Return to That Day
94%
Hands down the most powerful romance I've seen. I felt it was a bit too short. When the credits started rolling, I jumped out of my seat with a "What?!! That's it?!!". But the many moments that it almost made me cry (can you believe it? ...) made up for it. Many scenes struck a chord and reminded me of Kare Kano, which was also an equally powerful anime. Never shall I forget the love triangle of Kyosuke, Madoka, and Hikaru.
Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning
84%
Damn. What a let down. Too much talk about having sex and not enough character interaction/development. It added some more depth to the overall KOR story, but I still wish I never saw it.
Kimagure Orange Road OVAs
82%
There were some good episodes but the self-contained nature only made it seem like filler even though it did add to the characters' depth. The OVAs really lacked what made the series so special: a genuine 80s atmosphere. Overall, it was fun, but not nearly as memorable as the series.
For those who are into romance, KOR is the definitive anime. After you've seen the series and I Want to Return to That Day, you will never go back to Love Hina, Chobits, or AYA.

Hmm...double commenting on this feels a bit stupid, but what the hell ;)
But I guess that giving low grades is a somewhat difficult task, and anything below 5/10 is considered to be pretty much intolerable crap. Like I said, I kept thinking on a 4-10 grading scale - where 7/10 is the point of mediocrity - when giving all those grades...so I went through the trouble of editing all the grades I've given to better fit the 1-10 scale. I'll dump here the full conversion chart from 4-10 to 1-10 I used:
10 = 10
9.5 = 9
9 = 8.5
8.5 = 7.5
8 = 6.5
7.5 = 6
7 = 5
6.5 = 4
6 = 3.5
5.5 = 2.5
5 = 1.5
4.5= 1
4 = 0

Not been watching too much new stuff lately, comes with being poor.....
Episodes 6-10 of the Twelve Kingdoms: 8.5, keeps getting better and better.
Episodes 16-20 of Angleic Layer: 8 Apart from one episode that was overly mushy, and one part where a competitors personal problems are sorted out in 5 minutes, it's still pretty good
Mahou Tsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto (Somedays Dreamers): 7.5 Very good, but there was something missing, something holding it back from greatness. can't really put my finger on it.
Haibane Renmei (rewatch): 9.3 dammit that is good!
I've got the three Tenchi Muyo movies, but I haven't had time to watch them yet. And since a number of people have brought this subject up, I do use the 1-10 scale.
1-2: Total and utter crap. Probably absolutely hilarious to watch maybe once if you enjoy laughing at bad movies.
3-4: Plain bad. Generally avoid, unless you like bad movies (like me, they're funny......sometimes)
5-6.9: Mediocre, sometimes worth watching because they are fun, but generally poorly done, no matter the potential.
7-8.9: Good stuff. Well worth watching, but could have been better.
9-10: Mandatory watching. Masterpieces.
As you can see, I am generally quite discerning when it comes to what I buy.....

This had an awesome story line, no doubt, but I really have to connect to characters to fully enjoy an anime and this one sadly lacked in that department, also the grand majority of powers were very... obscure (script writing? Scryed.
This had an awesome story line, no doubt, but I really have to connect to characters to fully enjoy an anime and this one sadly lacked in that department, also the grand majority of powers were very... obscure (script writing? WTF?). That and every character design was absolutly horrid. For most of them it was the same body except with a different head of hair:
6.5.
I basically agree with everything here, except I was able to sympathize with the characters, or at least Kazuma and Kaname. The limited character design is particularly emphasized when you watch Gundam Seed, where every female character looks like an offshoot of Shirice and/or Mimori. The same can be said of the male characters. I'd probably give it around about an 8.0.
As for the ending, compared to a lot of others (not much of a standard, but still) it's actually pretty decent. Not nearly as bad as what many other people say it is anyway.

FLCL. I do hate to be a bore, but I really did enjoy it. Okay lets see the particulars then:-
Plot: A geniunley sweet little tale about growing up and all that lurks before you. However you may not notice owing to all that goes on.
Characters: All present and correct. Put-upon 12 year-old, childish father, random classmates, ex-girlfriend (of elder brother) who has some serious issues, rather loopy alien. Like I said, all seems to be in order.
Animation: Superb, and switches in style as frequently and as randomly as the program itself.
Dubbing: Believe it or not, but pretty good.
Music: Quality indie-punk from The Pillows.
That seems all. 9/10

Time to bring this one back....Let me explain that I have not seen Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo (and however many other Tenchi things there are), so I may be missing out on some bits here, but anyway....
Tenchi Muyo in Love: 7.8 This was OK, but there were some story bits that didn't really fit in or were just there with no explanation, and the total production look wasn't really what I expected from a movie, but a good watch, anyway.
Tenchi Muyo: Midsummer nights eve, aka Daughter of Darkness: 6.9 I didn't like this one all that much. It seems to be out of step with the rest of the Tenchi universe, and everything happened so quickly, plus the antagonist really didn't get enough background to let us know (or figure out) why she's doing what she is doing, and the overally look didn't look movie grade either.
Tenchi Muyo in Love 2 aka Tenchi forever: 8.5 The best of the lot, in my opinion. A more complete story than the others, and a quality production look to it as well, what I would expect from a movie. The main downer was I'm not sure how some bits fit into the Tenchi storyline.

Angel's Egg - 8. I'd been looking forward to this movie for about three years, which had an effect on my expectations. It was beautiful and extremely haunting, but so open-ended that you aren't really sure what to think about it. I love anime that make me think, but this one just didn't give much to go on, which was my only complaint, but a complaint that knocks it down two points. Otherwise, it's an amazing art film that will stir deep emotions and thinking in you, if you let it.
Doraemon - 7. It's hard to rate anime like this since they aren't really life-changing or impactive, but are great at what they are. Doraemon is a cute, silly sitcom with 7-minute episodes, about a space cat from the future who lives with a young Japanese boy, and hilarious hijinks ensue (sort of like an anime Alf). I know I'm enjoying it enough to keep watching it, which I certainly can't say for some much more dramatic anime.
Galaxy Express 999 TV series - 8. Some of the things that go on in this series are really rushed when they didn't really have to be. The many, many dfferent characters that Tetsuro meets only usually get about an episode each (and, in the case of poor Clear, the glass robot, only about 1/3rd of an episode). If some of the poor characters/situations had been taken out (such as Andres the notorious robber), it would have left room to expand on the more interesting ones. The 70's animation and music really add to the somber, lonely atmosphere; a beautiful classic that really should be released in the U.S. someday.
Ghost in the Shell - 4. Piece of crap. People hail it for being creative and innovative for its time, but I really don't think it should get credit for starting as many annoying anime cliches as it started. Pretty animation and nifty gadgets do not a good movie make.
Magical Circle Guru Guru - 6. A silly parody of RPG video games. If you like fantasy and comedy, this is the perfect combination of both. Great for what it is, but don't expect anything more out of it.
Millennium Actress - 10. Beautiful. Amazing. I can't recommend this anime enough. It has a wonderful central theme that is unclothed with a sharp emotional jolt at the end and, like Chiyoko, you leave with the feeling that the journey to get there was what you really enjoyed.
Texhnolyze - 7. Can't say I like it near as well as the other stuff Yoshitoshi ABe has worked on, and I'm sort of skeptical about the plotline revolving around artificial limbs. But it's unique and interesting and I'm going to try and finish it, out of loyalty to ABe if nothing else.
Windy Tales - 8. This rating is tentative since I've only seen one episode so far (and only two are out on fansub), but it looks great so far and I'm really looking forward to it. I like the unique character designs (which are, incidently, pretty remniscent of Legend of Zelda: Windwaker) and the breezy atmosphere.
Also, I've noticed that, strangely, a lot of people seem to be watching the same shows, most notably Now and Then, Here and There, FLCL, and Vision of Escaflowne. Odd.

I haven't done this in awhile. Hummm...
Kaleido Star (1st season)- 9.0 refreshingly bright and cheery!
Maharomatic (1st season)- 8.2 pretty good for ecchi based humor (reminded me of a lesser Full Metal Panic!)
Kenshin (1-65)- 8.8 a lot better than I thought it would be
Utena- 8.4 a little too repetative, a little too "artsy", but a good finale
Excel Saga- 8.8 nice, relaxing fluff
Juuni Kokki- 8.0 first 13 eps worth a 10, then it looses its footing. Too bad
Millennium Actress- 9.5 see Emeraldas' comments above
Whisper of the Heart- 9.6 just the pick-me-up I needed!
Elfen Lied (1-8)- 8.9 too much of everything, but still compelling
Last Exile- 9.0 a few too many confusing points, but very beautiful, and very well paced
Chrno Crusade- 9.2 still reeling from its surprising depth (possibly caused the most tears to date...)
Haibane Renmei- 9.5 beautifully done in all areas

It's an incredible anime. It really engaged my emotions and my mind, which is a double edged sword since it's not a light fare by any means. The cinematography is one of the best I've ever seen, anime or not. Although, having said that, as a purely personal preference, it was too dark for me sometimes, as in you couldn't see what was happening. I know it was done to enhance the feeling of uncertainty as well as the wolf imagery, and as such it was used brilliantly, I just thought also a tiny, little bit excessively. In any case, I highly recommend it.

Girls Bravo, Season 1: 5.5
Although the characters are a little too one-sided, this still manages to garner a few chuckles at least. It's just too silly at times. And no real progress in any sort of plot details doesn't help either. Guess I'll have to wait for next season.
Interlude: 7.5
I'll probably give my comment later on this, except to say I think most people should watch this. It's bleak, but it's still worth it.
Aishiteru Ze Baby: 8.5
With a desperately slow beginning, and to be quite honest, a slow middle and end as well it might put you off, but you'd be missing out on great character development and generally quite a sweet story.
Ragnarok: 3.0
Probably should get lower, but for a strange idea that there are still a lot of anime worse than this. So far, out of all the shows I've seen, this is the worst. It seemed incapable of portraying the characters in a way that would make me like or even respect any of them. By the last episode when most of them reunite I realised "Man, I hate all of them".

I've finally finished with an anime that all of you have already seen except me...drumroll please:
FLCL - 9. I really wanted to hate this, I really wanted to say how overrated it was, how over-exposed, how pointless, how confusing. But...no. See, I saw the first episode back when I was an anime virgin and was left pretty blah about the whole Furi Kuri phenomenon, and it was only until last week I decided to give it another try. Yes, I loved it. You all know why it's so good, so I won't elaborate further. Fantastic stuff.
Fullmetal Alchemist - 10. Amazing. That is all.

This could get long. I've seen quite a few recently...
FLCL- 8.5
The good news: It's funny as hell, well animated, has well-rounded characters and a deeper meaning, outstanding soundtrack
The bad news: You're never sure what the deeper meaning is, makes almost no sense until the end, and leaves quite a few loose ends untied.
Read Or Die(OAV)- 9.5
My only problem with this entire anime was that it tried to do a bit too much in a bit too small of a timeframe. Everything else is damn near perfect. Also, Miss Deep was the most badass character that I can think of in recent memory.
Cowboy Bebop- 8.5
This would have been a perfect 10, but the fact that there half of the entire series is filler really drags it down. While it makes good use of the filler, a solid plot would have been nice.
Rune Soldier- 6.5
While it may be funny, have unique character designs, relatively well-rounded characters, and good artwork, the lack of plot, a subpar musical score, and downright bad animation made what could have been a good anime into a mediocre one. There were(get this) 5 plot related episodes. Out of a 26 episode series, that's just sad. Even Cowboy Bebop had twice that.
Love Hina-8
Funny as hell, and its occasional romantic moments work very well, and the character development that each character goes through is massive. But, sadly, what could have been one of THE greats is reduced to just a great anime because it overplays the humor and underplays the sentimental aspect.
.hack//sign-8
It could have been a perfect 10, but this had the exact opposate problem that Cowboy Bebop did: something happens in every episode that's plot important, however, that's normally not the focus of the episode. That creates the truly annoying affect of feeling obligated to sit through the times when nothing is really happening, afraid you'll miss something. This is the only anime I can thing of that has too much character development.

Finally, I have finished it.......
Angelic Layer: 8 A solid 8 for that one. Most enjoyable, it's very sweet. Although there were some parts that just sat on this side of the border of mush, (and a couple that went over), and a few very sudden bits, a well rounded story that had an ending that didn't feel rushed (amazing!). Over all a good job, and for once one that I think is far better than it's manga counterpart.
and continuing stories...
Twelve Kingdoms: 8.5 Still enjoying it greatly, but I am beginning to see why it is 45 episodes. :sly2:
read or die ova - 8.7
i dont really mind how the characters or story didnt get much development, what really got on my nerves was how readman kept on saying the dumbest things, over and over again. other than that, great anime, incredible action scenes, and "deep" was hot.

A couple of new running reviews:
Ghost in the Shell - Stand alone complex: 8.5 (eps.1-4) I'm liking this so far, looks like they've started to dive into a major story in ep.4, rather than spend half the time on pointless filler, and Tachikomas are so damn cool! Major downsides so far: CG looks a little obvious in some parts.
Neon Genesis Evangelion: 9 (eps.1-5) This is turning out to be just as good as I remember, and being the platinum edition makes it all bright and shiny too. Minor annoyances to date: a couple of things just happen, without too much expanation. But that's not too bad, it's easy enough to put the pieces together.

Thanks to Madman and my parents recent trip to Bali, I've been wallowing in Ghibli for the past few days!
Laputa: Castle in the Sky: A well-paced story that kept me on edge until the closing credits. I was also amazed at the technical proficiancy for such an old film. 9/10
Princess Mononoke: Story and action of epic proportions with a haunting score that is easily Joe Hisaishi's best, however, characters play second fiddle and the backgrounds weren't as aesthetically pleasing as I expected. 7.75/10
The Cat Returns: Seemed a little tentative at first but it turned out to be thouroughly enjoyable. Haru is my favorite Ghibli heroine. This was my first Ghibli film I'd seen that wasn't directed by Miyazaki or Takahata, and I could see the difference, but if this is the direction Ghibli will take after they both are gone, you won't see me worrying. 8/10
Only Yesterday: Wow. It awazed me how seemingly idle chatter spoke more volumes then poetic monolouges ever could. Managed to invoke a sense of nostalgia out of me even though my life experiences and culture are completley different to that of the characters, which says alot about the universal appeal of the movie. Sincere and believable, Only Yesterday truely is a magnificent piece of cinema that has etched itself high on my favorite anime list. 9.5/10
__________
Also, as my parents were shopping for Ghibli films in Bali the woman serving them said, "You but this. He will like":
Sailor Moon S: Hearts in Ice: This is my forst forray into the Sailor Moon world since those 3 dubbed episodes I watched as a child, and it was...erm...interesting. I find it very hard to take the romance seriously, but I was surprised at the comedy element, Sailor Moon's seiyuu was surprisingly good. The endless transformations and special moves did bug me a little though I found it funny that in one scene they actually got smited before finishing (OMG reality!). Not very subtle, but alright never-the-less. 7/10.
I might actually get off my arse and write a student review for some of these.

Laputa: Castle in the Sky - This has now become my favourite Ghibli film over Spirited Away. The story was so interesting and never had a dull moment in it. Characters were so well done as is characteristic of Ghibli, and the animation was above par. Humour, when touched upon at the right time, was very funny! 9.5/10
Excel Saga: Very zanny, but I find the humour repetitive and sometimes not funny at all. Hyatt makes an excellent character but the others need more work. This is also a definite case of subs>dubs. Who the heck made the voice actress eat a mound of gravel before doing her part of excel? Quickly changed it back to dubs, Japanese seiyuu of Excel really, ahe, excel at her job! (corny pun! corny pun! corny pun) 7.5/10
Tokyo Godfathers: What an incredibly different way to view anime! I forgot at times that I was watching an animated film as the setting was very gritty and laced with realism throughout the movie. The "act of God" throughout the movie I took with a pinch of salt and realised that the director was trying to convey the miraculous spirit of christmas. 9/10

The story was excellent but it dragged a little.
Ai Yori Aoshi: 8/10
Aoi was too perfect, and the comedy was bland. Its a great love story.
Happy Lesson: 6/10
The story wasn't fufilling, the ending waas to sudden. There wasn't a real conflict. The story didn't seem to go anywhere.
Steel Angel Kurumi 2: 2/10
Everything about the show was bad.

Witch Hunter Robin: 8 (eps.18-22): Finally found time to sit down and watch this one. Still going strong for me, just starting to lead up to the climax of the story.
s-CRY-ed = 6.8
This one was a re-watch and I have to admit that I remember enjoying it much more the first time I saw it a few years ago. This time around seeing it was a surprisingly tedious experience a lot of the time. I still liked most of the character designs, some plot points, and the ending, though.

Well it seems like everyone else was doing it, so what the heck.
Blue Gender 15/26 episodes - 7.5/10
Quite a lot better than I was expecting. Pretty bleak, but the atmosphere and situation are portrayed quite well.
His and Her Circumstances a.k.a. Kare Kano = 9.4
When I first begun watching it I thought "What the heck is all the fuss about?" but by the end I couldn't get enough. I'm definitely hoping for a second season and in the meantime manga here I come! The anime is smart, insightful and very engrossing. It has a great, character-driven story. The two things that I didn't like were all the re-caps (there were just soooo many of them! I mean, seriously, you won't believe it!) and the ending. The latter because they introduced a new "problem" for the protagonists right before they ended the anime. I can only hope that they did so because they were looking to make a second season. In addition, the anime was sometimes a bit too goofy for my tastes but that didn't detract from my overall enjoyment of it and I got used to it soon enough. Oh, do read the translators notes in the Bonus section. Very informative. I wish they did something like that for all/most anime.

Midori No Hibi - 8.5
I was really surprised that they did not go for the cheap laugh and avoided most of the eechi opportunities that could have been done with the idea of a guy getting a girl as his right hand. The ending credits for the series have become one of my favorites. Another thing that was nice was the fact most of the characters were introduced early in the series and were seen throughout the series; they were not used for a quick laugh and never seen again. It was enjoyable way to spend a few evenings this past week.

Some more running reviews!
Kotetsu Tenshi Kurumi 2 (Steel Angel Kurumi 2) (eps. 1-6): 3.4 : I went in expecting this to be rubbish, just unsure of what kind of rubbish....enjoyable rubbish, rubbish so rubbish it's funny, or just plain rubbish. Well, it's just plain rubbish. So far it borrows a lot from the original series (including the title song, which has been rather averagely remixed), and the 'villians' as of yet are truly pitiful. On the plus side, I think the character designs for Saki and Karinka are better that the first, and it did raise a chuckle from me now and then, but those pluses are heavily outweighed by negatives so far. I'll keep watching (partly because I'm a bit stubborn), in the vain hope it either rises to somewhat enjoyable, or descends into so bad it's funny.
Azumanga Daioh (eps. 10-14): 9 This set of episodes are the funniest I have seen to date. Much funnier than the first 2 discs (and they were damn funny).
R.O.D the TV (eps. 1-4): 8.9 So far, I am finding this series to be bloody brilliant. Amusing, good fight scenes, nice character designs, good music, I don't know about the plot yet, as most of these episodes are used to introduce the characters and set the scene. Episode 4 looks to be the beginnings of a plot, and I'm interested in our villians. I'm keeping on with this one.
The Twelve Kingdoms (eps. 19-22): 8 This is still a good epic fantasy series, although it is starting to test my patience some (and I have a lot of patience). It is taking it's sweet time, and I really cannot see how the last 8-9 episodes are going to tie in with......anything, storywise, that is. Overall, it's still enjoyable, so I'm keeping at it. I just hope it hurries up.
edit:A couple more...
She, The Ultimate Weapon (eps. 7-10): 7.8 Hmmmm.....the emotion is good, the premise is good, but the complete lack of the political and military side of the situation makes it kind of hard to follow. I've been left with some questions that I'm not sure are going to be answered, and in a couple of scenes, the tragic value was ruined by me getting the feeling of 'hurry up and die, already!'. Also, the character designs are rather disconcerting. With the exception of Shuji (he looks as if he should be in a nursing home, not high school), I think the designs are rather cute, but that particular style of design just does not fit with this serious genre, so it becomes distracting. Having said that, there is enough there to keep me interested.
Last Exile (eps. 20-23): 8.5 Coming to the climax of the series now, and it is very good. However, there are situations that require a lot more background information to make it even better, and to explain the actions of some of the characters.
Another edit: Gahh! pay attention to me!
Princess Mononoke: 8.8 Wow. This is a good movie. I like the Japanese mythological feel to it. However, I did not find this to be one of Ghiblis more family friendly films (considering there are 2 decapitations and several instances of severence), as the PR stuff said it was, and thus, the art style did not completely fit the story. Perhaps a more gritty, realistic look would have done better. But anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed this film (when the DVD wasn't playing up....).

Many apologies for the double post, but I have been editing and editing my last post, but this thread has been moving further and further down the thread, so no one has read my opinions, and it's.... :( ......getting me down.......making me feel unloved :whine: .....not really, but now I have got your attention....
So, pay attention to me!!
Jin-Roh : 9 This is one hell of a movie. It is a bit long, and it is rather depressing, but for some reason it makes a refreshing change from everything else. One of the intriguing things I noticed was that there was not a single Japanese firearm in the entire film. They were all German. MG42, Mauser c96, Kar 98k, MP 38, MP40, MP41, MP43/MP44/Stg44, also a couple of Sten guns and a Thompson M1928 used by the Guerillas, all quite detailed. For a rather long film (102 minutes), it is rather paced well, it doesn't seem to be that long (until you look at the clock an go crap it's 1:45am.....). the only things I think were negatives in this film were that I didn't think there was enough emphasis on the Jin Roh. They kinda just appear at the end.......also it would seem that some knowledge of the manga is required to understand the background. Whilst this really doesn't suffer from this problem as some others (Spriggan, anybody?), and isn't really necessary ( it is actually a story based in that manga universe, not a film adaptation of the manga), some parts may fall into place a little smoother having read the manga (Which I believe is called Hellhounds: Panzer Cops). And, for the details peoples like me, the MG42 fires a full power rifle cartridge at a very high rate of fire. It has a kick like hell, there is no way that anybody can shoot one of those things from the hip with any sort of accuracy at all. So all those special unit cops would have their guns pointing at the ceiling very quickly, but it does look very cool. Also, I happened to notice that for some reason the other guns have a loud sound to them, but when the MG42's let loose with their very distinctive ripping noise, they seem to be very quiet, almost muted. I don't know whether it's just me or.....
I seem to have waffled on for too long. Perhaps it shows just how much I like this film.

Oi Major Tom, I read your reviews and they're very good, but this thread is more for listing anime you've seen with a score and sometimes a brief justification for that score. It's not really for in depth discussion about reviewing quality.
I reckon you should do a few of these up as a Student Reviews in the Library section. I'm sure you'll get favourable responses.

The last anime I picked up was Read or Die. The character designs are very original, wonderful OST and fantastic animation. The three OAVs were the perfect length for the story. Probably the best anime I've watched in a few months. 9.2

Reign the Conquerer: 4.0
A really weird take on Alexander the Great. The story wasn't really bad per se, but then I've never been much of a history buff. I also really hate Peter Chung's character designs - with a passion.
King of Bandit Jing (TV series): 5.0
The very first line is actually really really funny - which is a shame because the rest of the anime is kinda average. With no continuity in the storyline, and no background to show what makes Jing tick, you can't really invest too much time into this. Jing really needs something other than the Kir Royale. Strangely, the action in the last episode was actually pretty good.
King of Bandit Jing OVA (Jing in 7th heaven?): 5.5
Provides a bit of back story here, but otherwise it's just a long episode of Jing, with a long dream sequence that's not nearly as trippy as some other dream sequences in other shows.
Argentosoma: 7.0
A decent anime at last, but still missing that extra something. 1st episode is a bit of a waste. It has a nice plot twist towards the end that's quite hard to pick, and also one of the more interesting politically focused episodes I've seen. And I think Hattie's kinda cute, so that's always a bonus.
Blue Gender: 6.5
I thought the 1st six or seven episodes of this were pretty good - until they get onto the space station, and then it slows down dramatically. This would be alright, but they don't seem to do anything towards making a grand finale. Instead the ending's fairly limp - I also thought the conclusion to Seno Miyagi's side story was fairly contrived.
