Futari Ecchi is half romance, half comedy, and living up to its title is all ecchi. That being said, this show has at its heart a surprisingly tender relationship. The title doesn't express it, but Futari Ecchi is about a relatively normal, drama-free relationship between two inexperienced people whom do their best to learn their place in each
other's lives. Those lessons just happen to occur between bedroom sequences.
The characters are really all that happen in this show, as there's not much of a plot to speak of... unless you would consider what happens in your daily life a plot. That's not to say that this anime is boring, as the comedy should keep you entertained as long as you don't
mind ecchi-tinged humor that runs the gamut from that of Harimao's Treasure-Lupin-style to Buttobi CPU's somewhat more explicit comedy.
The animation is nice and fluid, par for the course in a newer OVA series. The artwork is nothing spectacular but workable and fits in with
the setting nicely.
Probably the biggest problem with this show is that without a plot and only four episodes to work with, there's only so much that can be done with these characters. Comedy ends up as the driving force; there is really nothing wrong with that, as long as you don't expect much more from it. If you enjoy a nicely done ecchi comedy with splashes of character growth, you'll probably enjoy what Futari Ecchi serves up.
