At first glance, you might think you accidentally started watching Fushigi Yuugi instead; the story feels eerily similar. A girl is chosen to save the earth with her seven knights to protect her, and drama/comedy/romance ensues. (Hayate, one of the knights, even resembles the character design of Tamahome).
But as the series continues, it finally becomes unique on its own. Distinctive characters keeps one interested enough, even with the common plot. This gives Pretear a memorable story when it could have otherwise faded into obscurity.
True to the "Snow White" part of the title, Himeno also has to deal with her new family. The idea of family becomes much more important as Pretear progresses and ties in with the main plot, providing continuity and themes that shows like this typically tend to lack. This depth adds to the series but ultimately leads to its biggest flaw.
With so much story taking place (the fights as Pretear, the story of the knights and the evil they face, Himeno's family and her growing love for one of her knights), it's a wonder so much can be fit into thirteen episodes. I found myself checking more than once that there were indeed only thirteen episodes, since it seemed more suited to a twenty-six episode format. Although the story is complete, it leaves you with a rushed feeling that detracts from the anime as a whole.
