Magic Users Club OVA is the kind of show that will cheer you up no matter what mood you are in. Lighthearted and not ashamed of being a little silly, the story always manages to convey a sense of fun, with jokes ranging from the trials of everyday high school life to not-so-subtle ecchi sight gags.
It's obvious that even the voice actors are enjoying themselves. Koyasu Takehito steals every scene he is in as the bishounen Aburatsubo, chasing and teasing Takeo endlessly. While some may not find the shounen ai jokes as funny as others, Takehito fits perfectly in the role and is the star of the show.
Perhaps because Aburatsubo fits so well into the story, it becomes more obvious when a character feels out of place. The reporter Minawa and his photographer take away from the cheerfulness that makes the show so fun and they stick out like a sore thumb. As grown-ups in a world of children, it's no wonder they are the show's only down point.
With magic-using high school students mixed in with an alien threat, the story combines fantasy and science fiction surprisingly well. At the beginning, it seems more like a mecha anime than the hilarious romance that it really is (at first I thought I was watching the wrong show, especially since there was no sound for a minute or two). But as the series continued, the romance, magic, and aliens all make an unlikely combination for a great story. Toss in one of the most charming ending songs out there and you have a winner. If you're looking for an enjoyable show that never takes itself too seriously, you will like Magic Users Club OVA.
